Do you have words that you live by; perhaps you would even a phrase that you would call your “motto”? Martin Luther never had an official “motto,” but he apparently often repeated the words, “I am baptized.”
Too often we think about baptism as an event in the past. It is also a reality in the present. Notice that Luther said “I AM baptized,” not, “I was baptized.” Baptism is about now.
When you consider what God promises to work in and through Baptism, it is too much to be limited to a single event – it takes eternity to experience. When you woke up this morning you probably didn’t jump out of bed and declare “I am baptized;” I know that I didn’t. But the truth is, when you got out of bed and as you read this and as you go about your day, you ARE baptized. Live in that baptismal grace today!
