Last night I had the wonderful experience of hearing the Florida Singing Sons Boychoir at their Wintersongs concert. My son is in the Residence Choir and it is exciting to see him grow in the area of music.
Another member of our congregation has a grandchild who is just beginning with FSSB in the Training Choir. We were talking before the concert and I told him that he was going to be amazed at what they got out of these boys. His response was elegantly simple, “that shows they have it in them.” It reminded me of the value of setting high expectations.
I sometimes think that we set our expectations of God too low. During this Advent season, the liturgical prayers begin, “Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come…” What if God actually showed up in all His power? Wouldn’t that be unexpected; wouldn’t that be a surprise; wouldn’t that upset your Sunday morning routine?
God can’t meet or fail to meet our expectations when we have none. Most often we don’t expect too much of God, we expect little or nothing of God.
Here’s the good news: God is greater than our expectations! We may not see Him stirring up His power or recognize how Christ comes into our lives each day, but He is still there with the power of His presence.
It may not be that we need higher expectations of God. What we need more than anything is the eyes to see Him always exceeding our expectation.
So, as you head off to Church tomorrow, what are you expecting?
