I know there are some who will mock me for this sacrilege, but I don't carry a cell phone. I'm holding off on that as long as possible, although my eldest daughter keeps reminding me how much a need a cell phone! So when the home Comcast phone service became flaky on Saturday afternoon, I had no way of communicating directly with my wife and the outside world.
My only option proved to be to use some free credits with Skype, using the service to dial a land line phone number at my wife's office. I appreciated the ease with which I was able to contact my wife and the high quality of the audio through the program. I typically think of Skype as a program through which I may connect with my personal learning network or with a remote expert whom I want to have speak to my class. This was really the first time I used the service for simple communication of this sort. Skype passed the test.
