I had never thought about having students actively monitor a Google profile before reading this article, but I see the point that Dembo makes. In this new technology era, each of us needs to take more responsibility upon ourselves for protecting our own information than ever before. We each need to take computer security and identity theft seriously. We each need to be careful about the long-lasting nature of posts and emails. We also need to teach so many other elements of Internet safety. Perhaps this element is just another step in the progression of what will need to be taught so that our students are truly literate in proper usage of 21st century technologies.

One thought that came to my mind is that if students can Google themselves then they can also easily Google their classmates. What happens if they find something unsavory about a classmate that has been posted. What then? How do we deal with that in a God-pleasing way?

Certainly each of us needs to be more proactive than ever before in protecting and shaping our personal information. Is Googling yourself an essential part of the 21st century technology toolbox? Share your thoughts and opinions in a comment to this post.
