Everywhere I turn these days I find a road under construction. The road in front of my house has been a disaster for over a month as the city of Fort Lauderdale in their infinite wisdom has decided to replace the water main that runs down our street. I never quite know how I’m getting home when I leave work each evening. The road in front of and to the east of Church is also under construction. I can’t get away from it.
We had a tragic reminder this week of why roads need constant upkeep. Certainly, our hearts go out to the people in Minneapolis that were affected by the collapse of the I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River. They are in our prayers as they recover from injuries or mourn the loss of loved ones. Even more who will have nightmares and emotional distress over what they witnessed. I don’t know the Twin Cities that well, but I’m pretty sure that traffic is going to be a lot more difficult to manage as this bridge is eventually replaced. Road construction never seems to end for a good reason: roads (as well as bridges) need constant repair and maintenance.
The frustrating part of road construction is that it seems as soon as a project is finished, the road needs to be torn up again for something else. Road construction isn’t a destination it is a never-ending journey.
It might be helpful to apply that image to our Christian lives. Faith is not a destination, it is a process. Colossians 3:10 tells us, “The new person (that’s you and me) is continually renewed in knowledge to be like its Creator.” We are continually being renewed. We will arrive, but not in this life. There is a destination, but it will take you your lifetime to reach it.
What seems to me to be the great wisdom and comfort of realizing that we being “continually renewed,” is that we live day-by-day with Jesus. I begin my day with Him in prayer and reading His word and I end my day with His presence and benediction. When I can’t understand His purpose in a situation, I trust that He is there and He is bringing an ultimate good from ever circumstance of my life.
So, as you begin this weekend, I pray that you will have time each day to spend with your Savior. He is at work in you to continually renew your life to be like Him.
