Today will set a record in the United States and maybe in the world. There will be more weddings today, July 7. 2007, than there have ever been on any single date. At least that’s what CNN tells me.
I read somewhere that married men live longer than single men. One person suggested that if you want a long, lingering life with a slow death, get married. I guess that I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it and I suppose the many couples that are getting married today feel the same way.
The reason for this date being so popular is that people think 7/7/07 will be lucky. It might also be that future brides hope that their husbands will remember their anniversary if this is their wedding day. Who knows?
I came across an interesting new custom in the wedding business. In order to cut some of the obscenely high costs of the average American wedding, people are renting wedding cakes. Yes, I said rent. The rental cake is made of plastic with fake frosting. It looks good, but you wouldn’t want to eat it. This enables the happy couple to have a beautiful cake and then serve their guests a much less expensive sheet cake. A clever cost cutting move, I think, but I’m a man.
As I think about my own day-to-day conversations, many are like the fake wedding cake. I talk about the weather, baseball, or politics, but there is little to sustain the soul in those conversations.
But, when I bring God’s grace into my conversations, I become part of the answer to the prayer “ask the Lord who gives this harvest to send workers to harvest His crops.” (Luke 10:2)
I pray that 7/7/07 is a great day for you, whether or not you’re getting married. I also pray that it is a day of grace both in your life and your conversation.
