I have sometimes mused that maybe we should give the “regulars” at church Easter Sunday off so that we can accommodate our Easter guests. I don’t mean that at all. But, when you look at how many people turn up for Easter services compared to the church attendance that we see the Sunday after Easter, it can be a bit depressing.
“Outreach Magazine” had a recent cover story entitled, “Inside the Mind of the Unchurched.” Author, Dan Kimball, pointed out that many non-affiliated 20- and 30- somethings are “big fans of Jesus but are less thrilled with His followers and the churches where they worship.” (p. 65)
How will that play out this Sunday? Will you resent those people you’ve never seen who are sitting in “your pew” or will you introduce yourself to them? It’s really up to you. But your reaction will matter.
You see, we change attitudes one attitude at a time and we have to start with our own. If we love Jesus, we won’t want to let the church get in the way of others loving Him.
This has been all “law” up to this point. The good news is that the Kingdom of God does come to the hearts of people. Who knows, maybe in one of our churches this Easter someone will come to saving faith in Jesus Christ.
God bless you in this Holy Week.
