First off.....my apologies for not having posted over the past week. I've had a lot of work at school that really needed my attention. I'll try to do a better job of being consistent with my posts now that some of that is behind me.
Secondly, I ran across a very intersting article today created by an educational technology specialist entitled "Have You Googled Yourself?" In this article, Steve Dembo argues that not only should we teach ourselves and our students not to add quotes, pictures, or other information to the Internet that we don't want other people to see (since these items seem to last forever on the Internet), but that we should also actively monitor our Google profile and work to make it as flattering as possible, especially since so many employers are checking online sources when making human resource decision.

Dennis at Tech4Teachers talks about digital storytelling in this post. He visited a retired aircraft carrier with his 96 year old grandfather, recording his impressions during the visit. Since I've met his grandfather on several occasions, I followed these recollections more closely than the casual observer.

I have written before about RSS and it's significance as a communication tool. We have been optimizing all of our technology to effectively use RSS to communicate with those who want to be kept up to date. The key word there being want.
Effective communication tools allow the user to be in complete control of the information they receive. Users prefer control and options. Some people prefer emails while others use the tools available to aggregate news feeds.

For most of us, email has become both a blessing and a burden. I haven't done a good job of cleaning out my inbox, allowing emails to accumulate there for months, even years. Thankfully, I'm becoming much more adept in managing email in a way that works for me.

When I lived in Wisconsin, I would joke that there are two seasons: winter and road construction. Now I live in South Florida and there is only one season.

Perhaps you have seen a recent increase in your email inbox of messages saying that you have been sent an e-card greeting. Unfortunately, these hoaxes have the potential to lure unsuspecting users into downloading some nasty spyware. See this article for more information.

Check out this article for tips on teaching information literacy to students. I particularly like the idea of triangulation -- finding three sources that agree on important facts. Using that strategy, there is no reason not to allow Wikipedia to be used as A source. These guidelines are useful for anyone working to build information literacy skills with their students. Not only that, but they are also important guidelines for any adult to keep in mind as well.
