There is a great deal of angst in the world of publishing over the fate of newspapers. Circulation is declining for most major publications and the trends are not promising for the survival of newspapers in their current format.

60 days ago we installed the new "Blog" module here on TCD. At that time Google had 1,010 pages indexed for the site. Today they list 1,400. It goes to show that things built with Search Engine Optimization in mind do have an impact.

Haul Out the File Cabinet! -Tuesday, February 27, 2007

Here is a fascinating post on the Techlearning blog, advocating facetiously (although not entirely facetiously, I suspect) the removal of our personal file cabinets from our classrooms. The main idea is that these file cabinets draw us back to do the same things in the same way with our classes year after year instead of embracing new learning for ourselves and incorporating vibrant ideas for our 21st century students.

I don't know how many of you read the work of Jacob Nielsen, but his research work into the usability of websites is fascinating reading for anyone who creates or manages a website. His site is full of practical information for website creation. Although geared more specifically for a business audience, his ideas are also important for ministries that wish to make an impact in the world through technology.

What I really like about Vista - Part II -Thursday, February 15, 2007

There are a number of programs available that allow you to do a screen capture, but having it built into the OS is great. The snipping tool is a nice utility that allows you to "snip" any portion of your screen. Just select the "scissors" icon and select any portion of your screen for snipping. Once snipped the image is copied to your clipboard for pasting, can be saved to your hard disk or emailed out using your email client. This will be a great tool to use for helping to diagnose computer problems when talking with customers. It is also very handy for creating tutorials and user guides. All of the images in my last several posts were captured using the "Snipping Tool"

I was asleep last night. I thought I had set my laptop computer on hibernate, but about 3 AM I heard the Windows shut down music. Turns out that Windows Update had downloaded over 20 different security updates. Read more about these updates here.

What I really like about Vista -Wednesday, February 14, 2007

I have gone through another installation on my main desktop which went very smooth except for a graphics card issue that was quickly resolved. While Vista is not a must have upgrade, I do like it enough to want both of my main systems running it. Ultimate for the desktop and Business for the notebook.
Now that I have everything installed and running it's time to talk a bit about the features of the OS. While any new system takes time to learn, Vista is pretty intuitive. Most users will pick everything right up with one exception. It takes a little time to get used to navigating the file manager when opening and saving documents. Once you get past that it's a breeze.

Free Online Productivity Tools -Sunday, February 11, 2007

I've written in the past about the emergence of free, online productivity tools. One service that I have started using, particularly to collaborate with some other of our office staff on tasks lists and policy projects, is Google Documents. However, this is not the only service of its type. In fact, the number of players in this field is growing, providing a new type of challenge to Microsoft and its Office suite of software.

Vista - The "Final Installation" -Friday, February 09, 2007
By Jack Hoelz :: 315 Views ::

|
As indicated in my previous post, I'm not a believer in upgrading an OS so I go for the "Clean Installation". After installing Vista over XP-Pro and having no major issues I decided it was time to do the "Long Haul Install". The "Long Haul Install" is the OS installation I plan on using to support my system for a long period of time. I make sure all of the old drivers and .dll's are gone and that I have a very strong foundation without any cob-webs.
As usual I boot the system from the DVD drive and start the installation process. I get to the part where it asks me if I want to format my disk and I select "Yes" and then I'm confronted with an error message indicating that I can not upgrade as my previous version of Windows is not genuine.

Links Lists -Thursday, February 08, 2007

Today I'm going to inaugurate a new feature that I'd like to use at least twice a week. There are so many different articles that might be of interest to educators and/or technology coordinators that I don't have the time to write about in detail. So periodically I will simply share a list of links with perhaps a brief description of each link.

I haven't had the chance to post the past couple of days since I was in Chicago visiting my father. On Saturday night he was given the Seeds of Hope Award by WheatRidge Ministries. What a blessing it was to be present as my father was honored in such a way for a life of ministry to God's people. Congratulations Dad!

Installing Vista -Tuesday, February 06, 2007

Installing Vista was a snap. I'm not a big believer in "Upgrading" operating systems unless they are the same generation (XP to XP Pro). Performing a "clean" installation when possible is always the best choice. This wipes out the cob webs from the previous OS and gives you a fresh start.
The version of Vista I installed was "Vista Ultimate". I did not run the "Upgrade Advisor" prior to upgrading. I would recommend running it if you plan to upgrade.

Windows Vista & Office 2007 -Saturday, February 03, 2007

It's that time again! Two new products from Microsoft that will change the way many of us use our PC's.
As with any software upgrade, being an early adopter is not always fun. Over the next few weeks I'll take you through the process of my experience installing Windows Vista Ultimate and Office Professional 2007.
As a summary, I can tell you that Office 2007 is by far the more valuable of the two. The new ribboned interface and features such as "Smart Art" make it really fun and easy to work with. I'll start with the OS installation and them get into Office, so keep watching for new posts.

Three Boys -Friday, February 02, 2007

Two short whistle blasts brought the young archers to the line followed by a single whistle blast allowing the arrows to be cradled by the rest and released towards the target. The three boys; one twelve, another fifteen and another sixteen, were shooting at targets twenty yards away. The youngest...
