We as humans are good at pointing out the challenges inherent to new technologies, just as we are better at identifying challenges in our schools, homes and churches. However, I believe that Satan wants us to focus on the challenges rather than opening our eyes to the possibilities which God might be revealing to us through the challenges we face.
I thought about that once again after reading this article on the challenges schools face because of the proliferation of student cell phones in their buildings. I was struck by this comment found within the article:
While school administrators experience occasional heartburn over how creatively students might use their cell phones, some believe the time has come for teachers and school staff to work with technology used by students, not against it.
Seems like this school is making the move from only identifying challenges to also understanding that the Lord might be opening up possibilities for learning, growth, and service.
This is not to say that I'm advocating an alteration of school cell phone policies. Rather, cell phones and their use are an example of how we can sometime be so focused on the challenges they bring to student discipline and school climate that we ignore the fact that there might also be doors which are opening for student growth and achievement at the same time.
How about you and your school? Do you only see the challenges, or are you willing to also intentionally identify opportunities as well? What are the challenges AND opportunities of social networking? Of microblogging? Of YouTube? Considering opportunities MUST be an intentional process, because I believe Satan would prefer to bog us all down in the challenges of the moment.
