So much of web copy is quickly scanned and discarded by the eyes. The nature of the web is changing the nature of writing. What works for a formal paper is not going to necessarily translate well for Internet text, especially if one truly wants that Internet text to effectively communicate.
Does this mean that the writing skills we should be teaching should involve both formal writing as well as the more informal stylistic perspectives of web copy? Seems like that addition should already be a part of a writing curriculum. Just as we teach about business, letters, personal letters, formal academic writing, etc., so we should seemingly prepare students for blogging, writing on wikis, and other web-based formats.
Has anyone begun intentionally addressing these issues in their writing curriculum? Thoughts?
