and I'm the technology teacher at Shepherd of the Hills Christian School in Centennial, CO.

I have a heart and passion for technology and for educational ministry for our Lord Jesus Christ.

This blog is a natural result of these unique interests. I have 20 years of teaching experience in Lutheran schools, the last five exclusively as a technology teacher.

I seek to use the talents that God has given me to enhance His Kingdom in new, exciting, and creative ways, utilizing the technology tools with which we have been blessed to enhance ministry for Christ.

Here is a list from PC Magazine about the most commonly used passwords. That got me thinking about the list of skills we need to be teaching our students related to the online world:

  • Internet safety
  • Dealing with cyberbullying
  • Computer security
  • Creating passwords
  • Analyzing Internet sources
  • Social networking and posting Internet content
  • Plagiarism and copyright law

Rob Jacklin and I have been having posting back and forth on the topic of teaching problem solving through programming. It has been an interesting conversation, forcing both of us to think about issues relating to technology, education, and the 21st century skills necessary for our students in different ways.

You might be interested in this video on bullying, created by the principal of a Lutheran school in Michigan. While it may not be the most dynamic video, it does get me thinking a great deal about video and Lutheran schools.

Here is yet another example of why it is essential to teach our students (and ourselves) the importance of analyzing everthing we read and being careful to avoid taking some falsehood as truth.

I took a look at the latest post by Rob Jacklin on his blog. Rob raises some good questions about coding and programming as academic skills and their value. As you can tell from my response, I do think there is a place for coding and programming because of the problem solving skills they can help develop.

It has been a busy couple of weeks. I was the best man at my dad's wedding. I also had the honor of witnessing my dad being honored as the Alumnus of the Year at Concordia University Chicago. At school, there evening activities several nights a week as we finish the year. We are also in the midst of printing and binding our school yearbook before the end of classes.

Therefore, it has been tough keeping up with blogging. However, even if no one else notices when I don't blog, I notice. Blogging is a discipline that not only provides a forum for sharing information for others, but also gives me the incentive to keep learning and growing myself. After all, if I'm not learning anything new, how can I have anything relevant to share with others?

  • A Whole New Mind, by Daniel Pink: Actually, I'm re-reading this book (I may have to purchase a copy for myself instead of always using a library copy!)  Pink identifies six senses that are becoming essential for success in 21st century society. An excellent read for all educators and church leaders, even though it is not written from a Christian perspective.
  • Crazy '08, by Cait Murphy: A great study of the famous 1908 baseball season -- the last one where the Cubs won the World Series. Very much enjoying the description of the most memorable game in Cubs history -- the 4-2 victory at the New York Giants in the final National League game of that season.
